Our new Officers and Board of Directors for 2007-2008

Our 2006-2007 Rotarian of the Year Award went to Lisa Clary for her efforts to always insure that "the word gets out" about what Rotary is doing in our community. We have also been in the Rotarian Magazine and District Newsletters. Many thanks Lisa. (06/28/2007)

One of Rotary's most prestigious awards is our "Service Above Self Award". This years winner is Frank Malone, his only difficulty was finding "a few words to say" about receiving the award. Congrats to Frank, he deserves this award. (06/28/2007)

A "President's Special Award" went to Dave Yocum for his tireless efforts with our Service Trailer and equipment. Dave's diligence allowed the club to raise more than $4,000 that is used to support efforts within the local community. (06/28/2007)

The Club welcomes Rotarian Joe Mulkerrin. Joe is the  Rotary Foundation District 7600 Trainer and a former District Governor. Joe presented an informative  program on the Rotary Foundation. (07/19/2007)

Helen Malone from Great Britain (second from left) returned to the area this weekend. Members of the Club who hosted the Group Study Exchange earlier this year, met with her for a visit. Helen is a teacher, and is working to get her credentials to teach in the US in 2008 possibly in Richmond. (08/12/2007)

"The Philippine Islands invade South Hill". Our club welcomes the Group Study Exchange team from the Philippine Islands as visitors to District 7600. The team will also be touring other clubs and attending the District Conference. (10/11/2007)

The South Hill Club wins 2 District Awards. First the Community Service Award and also the Best Web Site Award. Congrats to all who helped win these awards.

Charlene Williams of the "Virginia Department of Veterans Services" spoke to the club about the role of V.D.V.S. as it supports our Vets and their families. (11/08/2007)

The South Hill Rotary Club welcomed Jamie Beadle of Charlottesville as guest speaker. Beadle is the Catastrophic Coordinator for the Mid Atlantic Zone for State Farm Insurance. He spoke to the group about his work and the effects a catastrophic event can have on a community.(11/15/2007)

Rotarian Tom Leggett with 75 Teddy Bears donated by our club for "Operation Teddy Bear". Congrats to Tom on a great job. (11/29/2007)

Pete Chalifoux, a retired engineer with Honeywell, spoke to the club about "Spectra" which, among other things, is a product used in body armor for our police and military personnel. (12/06/2007)

The Club welcomed Dr. John Cavan, President of SVCC, as guest speaker. Cavan updated members on things accomplished at the college and stating the school has become one of the leading institutions in the state. (03/06/2008)

Lee Nicholson and Ron Seward brought the club up to speed on the Lake Country Detachment 1085 of the Marine Corps League and their 2nd annual Lake Country Wildlife Art Festival and Decoy Competition. (03/13/2008)

Chris Teutsch of Southern Piedmont Center in Blackstone presented a program on land clearing to   develop pastures for livestock by comparing the more traditional methods of land clearing. (03/20/2008)

Mickey Sims of Buggs Island Telephone informed the club of the new "wireless" capabilities that will be introduced into our area by Feb. 2009. (04/03/2008)

The annual Emergency Services Dinner was held at the South Hill Fire department as appreciation for their tireless efforts to protect and serve our community. (04/17/2008)

A club tradition is for new members give a "self introduction" talk to the club. One of our new members Dan Poteralski updated the club on who he is and where he's been. (04/24/2008)

The Club held their annual "Adopt a Highway" clean up. Members picked up trash within their Adopted Area along Highway 1 North. This is one of many projects the club is involved in on a regular basis. (05/08/2008)

District Governor Jim Pierce has selected South Hill Rotary‘s Literacy Project as the District's nominee for the RI Public Relations award for the 2007-2008 year. A truly great effort by club P. R. Director Lisa Clary. (05/15/2008)

Guest speaker Jean Clary Bagley spoke to the club about "Cares". A program of local businesses sponsoring a school class from grade school to high school and paying for the first year at community college. (05/22/2008)

A new Paul Harris Fellow is inducted into the South Hill Club. "Rotary Ann" Ann Fitzgerald was given this honor by her husband who has been a Rotarian for 62 years.(05/29/2008)

Rotarian Bruce Settle inducts our 2 newest members, Susie Brack and Woody Kidd. Both new members have already been "getting involved" in all club projects.(05/29/2008)

Rotarian Frank Nanney presented a brief overview program for our scholarship winners on the history of "Rotary" and of the "South Hill Club". Very informative.(06/12/2008)

The Club welcomed Bill Glass with Haiti Outreach Ministries as guest speaker. The ministry is designed to share the Gospel with the people of Haiti through worship, education, medical clinics and student nutrition and vocational education. The program also works with "Stop Hunger Now" that Rotarian Lee Warren is involved in on the local and state level to help see that children get a nutritional meal during the school day in Haiti. Our "Rotarian of the Year" for 2007-2008 club year is club Secretary/Treasurer Tom Smith. Our hearty congrats to the man who keeps it all together for this club with his tireless efforts. Nice job Tom. (06/26/2008)

Doug Hinman is the "Service above Self Award"  winner for the 2007-2008 club year. Doug and his wife Jackie operate The Shepard’s Inn and The Shepard’s Shop in South Hill.  It is a Christian entity that operates on donations and sales from the shop only. (06/26/2008)

Incoming Club President Herbert Farrar of Farrar Auction and Realty sets flags around South Hill for the Fourth of July. Mr. Farrar and his company have been doing this for over 12 years as a community service and a way to make the town welcoming to visitors and travelers for the holiday weekend.
