"Salvation
Army Annual Christmas
Bell Ringing"

Rotarians
annually volunteer their
time on the Thanksgiving
Holiday weekend to help
raise funds for this
worthy endeavor. This
year 2 Saturdays were
covered by the club. The
weather was not nearly
as pleasant as some past
years, but all 21 of our
hearty Rotarian
volunteers survived the
cold.

South Hill Rings in
Christmas 12/02/2008
(Christmas Celebration)
Once again the members
step up in force as 12
Rotarians arrived and
provided much needed and
unanticipated help as
the Chamber of Commerce
kicked off its new
Christmas offering to
the public. Some 551
area residents arrived
to see the Toyland
displays and to get a
photo with Santa. More
than 210 photos were
taken and offered free
by Occasions
Photography. Not all the
kids were thrilled to
see Santa and several
passed on the
opportunity, tearfully!!
Also 4 members spent the
afternoon popping 170
bags of pop corn to hand
out as the children
exited the event.

Spring
Fest/Music Fest (May
12, 2009)
Spring Fest was a good
event for the club and
will help our
scholarship fund. As you
can see the members had
some fun in spite of the
heat.

Music
Fest on the other hand
was extremely slow and
with the heat made for a
very long and tiring day
for the workers.

"Lunch Buddies"
Rotarians again this
year account for 33+% of
the number of volunteers
who are involved in this

"Teacher
Appreciation Day"
aka "Doughnut
Days"
Each
year the club honors the
teachers at various
local schools by rising
at "0 dark
hundred" in the
morning and delivering
fresh warm doughnuts to the
staff. This year 42
dozen were delivered. Needless to say they love this
idea especially since we
first removed all the
calories!!! I also
noticed a few members
putting on a little
weight....Hmmm!

"Emergency
Services Dinner"
Another
annual event hosted by
our club is our E. S.
Dinner. The club members
host and cook a steak
dinner for the local
Police Department, Fire
Department and Rescue
Squad. This year about
40 of their members were
able to attend. Prizes
are donated to the event
by local businesses and
they are won in a
"raffle" in
which only the E. S.
Personnel participate.
It is a fun evening for
the approximately 40
Rotarians as well, in
spite of the work
involved.

Rotarians
Feed Soldiers

The
South
Hill Rotary Club
provided boxed lunches
to the 20th
Airborne Brigades’
37th Engineer Battalion
from Fort Bragg NC. The
Rotarians enjoyed lunch
and fellowship with the
men while they took a
short lunch break at
Rudd’s Creek and
Palmers Point on Kerr
Lake in Mecklenburg
County. The soldiers
(who are from different
home states all over the
country) are working in
conjunction with the
U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers rebuilding the
attendant houses at four
entrances to Kerr Lake.
They are very
appreciative of the
support, kindness and
the wonderful meals they
have received while in
the community. The
American Legion Post 79
in South Hill, churches,
restaurants, civic
organizations, clubs and
more have all offered to
feed the young men.
Several of them
stated that they had
been overwhelmed with
support from the folks
here and they have been
fed very well and would
like to thank all those
who welcomed them to the
area. They said they
don’t always have
people come out to see
them on a job site,
invite them to meals or
give them so much
publicity. The soldiers
responded warmly and
politely to all the
attention. The Rotarians
also handed out phone
cards to the men to use
or to share with other
soldiers who may need to
call home to a loved one
when they are deployed
to Iraq in the next few
months.
