About Us - What is Rotary?
________________________Rotary is an organization of business and professional
leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help
build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 200
countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians
belong to more than 32,000 Rotary clubs.
Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the
community's business and professional men and women. The
world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical,
nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
The main objective of Rotary is service, in the community,
in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop
community service projects that address many of today's most
critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger,
the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support
programs for youth, educational opportunities and
international exchanges for students, teachers, and other
professionals, and vocational and career development. The
Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

South
Hill Club Receives International P. R. Award
The
South Hill Rotary Club was the recipient of the most
prestigious Rotary International Public Relations Award for
the 2007-2008 Rotary year for District 7600 during their
meeting 10/30/2008. The
Public Relations Award recognizes Rotary clubs that have
generated increased awareness and understanding of Rotary
through outstanding media coverage or other public relations
efforts. Competition and selection of winning entries take
place at the district level and
it is one of the highest honors a club can receive and it is
the first Rotary International Award for the club in its 80
year history. Past District Governor Jim Pierce (for Rotary

as well as the RI Publications Image Chairperson/Coordinator

community in their efforts to bring awareness and visibility
to the club and its participation in their hometown. The

LOCAL ROTARY PROJECTS

2008-2009
PROJECTS
The
Club has decided on the following projects for this Rotary
Year:
1-
The Book/Dictionary Project. The club will provide one reading
book to every student at South Hill Elementary School and a
personal dictionary (approved by the school) to each student
grades 3-5. Also, Picture Dictionaries will be provided to
each classroom for students pre-k to 2nd grade.
"Dictionary
Day"

"Labeling
Day"

"Book
Day"

2-
The Information Notebook Project. The club has created a
notebook containing information about South Hill including a
list of Service Clubs with meeting times and locations, local
Churches, local shopping and restaurants, local attractions
and contact information. All are provided with phone numbers
and/or addresses. These are provided to all the local
hotel/motels, the Chamber of Commerce, the airport office and
to the I-85 Welcome Center.

3-
The
South Hill Rotary Club reshuffled the deck at the Oct.16th
meeting and decided to reschedule the "Rotary Casino
Night" that had been planned for November 1st to sometime
in the spring. The consensus of the club members was that due
to the state of the economy and slow ticket sales, it would
better serve the club, the businesses who donated the
wonderful prizes and potential guests to wait until things
improved. Hopefully that will be in the near future and that
spring time will bring with it a renewed economy and a renewed
spirit for the people in the area and in the country. The
club appreciates those who have donated major prizes (Karobway
Furniture, Aaron’s Rentals, Amerigas, Freedom Life Fitness,
Lorene Building Supply, Fairfield Inn and Dr. Dance),
financial donations from Glen Barbour, Vulcan Materials and
Dr. Graham Powers and the many businesses that donated door
prizes. The club plans to hold on to all the prizes until the
event is rescheduled. The Casino Night proceeds will benefit
the Rotary Scholarship Fund. The club will roll the dice for a
rescheduled evening that will bring up winning numbers for
guests, the club, and the students who will benefit in June
2010 as they continue their education. Watch you local
newspapers for the future information on Rotary Casino Night
in the fall of 2009.

4-
The Teddy Bear Project. The
South Hill Rotary Club is spearheading the Operation Teddy
Bear Program for Gleaning for the World this year and Girl
Scout Troop 3263 in South Hill will be helping them collect
the Teddy Bears that will be shipped in time for orphaned
children in other countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, El
Salvador and Nigeria to have a Christmas gift on Christmas
morning. Rotarian Tom Leggett has been heading this program
for several years and has requested the club take on the
project annually. Local churches and their members are also
involved.
5-
International Project. A committee has been assigned the task
of advising the club of a suitable international project which
will help reduce child mortality.
These projects will be
added to our already sizeable list of projects such as the
"Lunch Buddies", "Accelerated Reader",
"4-Way Test Contest" and "Scholarship Auctions".

WORLDWIDE
ROTARY PROJECTS
POLIO PLUS
Although Rotary clubs develop autonomous service programs,
all Rotarians worldwide are united in a campaign for the
global eradication of polio. In the 1980s, Rotarians raised
US$240 million to immunize the children of the world; by 2005,
Rotary's centenary year and the target date for the
certification of a polio-free world, the PolioPlus program
will have contributed US $500 million to this cause. In
addition, Rotary has provided an army of volunteers to promote
and assist at national immunization days in polio-endemic
countries around the world.
ROTARIANS
AGAINST HUNGER
Another association for Rotarians
is the "RAH" (Rotarians Against Hunger) partnership with
"Stop Hunger Now". The goal of the partnership as with the
ending of polio worldwide is to end hunger on a global
scale. "RAH" was formed by Rotarian Ray Buchanan,
also President
of Stop Hunger Now, and Rotarian Hal Smith. Ray is a Rotarian
in the Raleigh Rotary Club and Hal is a Rotarian with the
East Chapel Hill Rotary Club both in North Carolina. It has
grown in their District 7710 clubs and is expanding to other
districts and clubs worldwide. The links below provide more
information about how everyone can be involved in this
worthy endeavor.

Rotarian Lee
Warren, a member of the South Hill Club since 2006, is the
Virginia Director for "Stop Hunger Now". Below are
links to articles and videos about Lee and the "SHN"
organization as well as a video shot in Haiti where current
projects are underway. Our club has been involved with some
local "food packaging" events in South Hill
and also one held at the District Conference shown below.

When Stop Hunger Now sends containers
of meals, there is always extra room at the top of the
container to send such requested items as computers, cloth
for clothes and school supplies. Rotarians shown here
donated numerous composition books, note books and
elementary school writing tablets to help Rotarian Lee
Warren with this project. (08/14/2008)to
South Hill
Rotarian Lee Warren addresses the 2008-2009 Rotary District
Conference 10/03-05/2008 in Portsmouth Virginia.
First, a demonstration of procedures
is given to Rotarians that volunteered to package the 10,000
meals purchased by several clubs in attendance at the
conference.
....and 1 hour
later all the meals were packaged, boxed and ready to ship
to places in the world in need of this life saving food.
Many South Hill Club members assisted as well District
Governor Bill Pollard (in the silly hat, can you pick him
out?) and the G. S. E. team (in the green shirts) from the
British Virgin Islands.

"THE BREAD BOX"
The South Hill Club also supports a local organization that
provides food to those in need within our local community. Rotarian
Tom Leggett, as head of this worthwhile project, accepts a
donation from the club as one of 2 annual donations. (01/25/2007)

JAMESTOWN 400 PROJECT
MARCH 30, 2007

The South Hill
Rotary Club is participating in the Jamestown 2007
Beautification Program by having crepe myrtle trees planted
along West Atlantic Street across from the SHPD building.
Wayside Nursery in South Hill agreed to do the plantings
and the project is officially underway with the Nursery
Crew, Rotarians, and Police Chief Norman Hudson all on hand.
Rotarian Steven Stanley is heading the Rotary's Jamestown
2007 Committee. The project is listed as one of many
projects underway around the state as the celebration
approaches. See our link page for a link to the official
